We are extremely fortunate to have access to a wide choice and selection of injectable drugs and inhalent agents. Using these pharmaceutical agents in sole or combination is truly safer and smoother than ever before. We perform various procedures from local anesthesia to general anesthesia. We customize each anesthetic protocol based on the age, type of procedure, and health status of your pet. All general anesthesia cases start with a pre-anesthesia examination and weigh-in the morning of their procedure. As a rule, an indwelling intravenous catheter is placed and IV fluids via an electronic pump is started. An injection of one or more drugs is then given as a pre-anesthetic sedative to relieve anxiety and fear. Shortly thereafter, it is followed by an intravenous combination injection to allow intubation (the passing of an endotracheal tube into the airway). At this point, our patient is connected to an inhalent anesthesia machine and monitored throughout the procedure. All general anesthesia cases are placed on a circulating hot water bed and monitored by a trained technician or veterinarian including electronic cardiac, respiratory and oxygen tissue monitors. Higher risk patients may have a computerized ECG (electrocardiogram) run throughout the entire procedure. As a rule, an injection of pain medication is administered just before surgery is completed to allow a smooth recovery. Each patient is transferred to the recovery area of the treatment room, packed with several blankets and hot water bottles and individually monitored by a technician. Once our patient is extubated (conscious enough to allow us to remove the throat tube), they are again wrapped in blankets with more hot water bottles and transferred to a holding cage for observation and recovery. This is the same routine whether it is for one of our own pets or yours.
